Consultation form for my partner

I didn't receive a consultation form in class, so I asked someone who had the form to send me what I needed for my notes to write about my partner. Consultation forms are very important to complete as a makeup artist as you could start applying someone's makeup and halfway through find out that they have an allergy to a product you are using or could have a skin condition that could affect your makeup kit and brushes.

I got the notes I needed and asked my partner the questions. Phoebe's skin was very soft and dewy and she was fair skinned, she had oval eyes and light brown/blonde straight hair and she was not allergic to anything nor on any medication.

Final Evaluation of the New Elizabethans project

At the start of this project, I was nervous and also excited. I enjoyed studying history at school and loved the idea of learning more but I was slightly nervous as I am quite new to makeup and thought I was going to struggle when it came to the application side of the course. My confidence soon began to grow the more lessons and practise I had. I really feel that makeup is more than just a passion to me, I really enjoy researching and coming up with new concepts and ideas and making that idea come to life by painting it on someone's face.

My favourite part of the project was the practical lessons, especially when we practised typical Elizabethan makeup styles and I also really enjoyed creating face charts. I had a lot of fun coming up with three final ideas for this project and I sat down one night and felt really creative and came up with a few ideas. I feel that my design was very unique and looked like a contemporary Elizabethan and included all the features of a woman from the Elizabethan Era.

The only part that let me down in this project was working with my partner as I said in my peer review that she failed to turn up with her three design ideas and I didn't receive them until not long before the assessment. Although this happened, I tried to not let it affect me or my grade as I carried on with my research and my practical lessons. I feel my partner may have been unorganised with her looks and final idea but I am happy with the final look I created and the images came out very well. For the blog, from the very start I enjoyed doing this and I found it a lot better than keeping a sketchbook, once I found myself in 'the zone', I could work on my blog for hours a day and not get bored of it and I think that's what's helped me enjoy this project more.

I think my makeup skills have improved a lot during the past few months and I have learned so many new ways of applying makeup and also how to use certain makeup brushes and products too. I am happy with the time management I set for myself throughout this project and I am happy with the amount of work done. I didn't find it hard to complete any of my assignments or homework and there was nothing I found difficult or disliked about this project. I am happy that my final design shows influence from contemporary makeup designs but also combines an Elizabethan twist into the look as well.

Overall, I have thoroughly enjoyed my first project and first term at university and I can't wait to return to start my new project and learn more.

Peer review

I really enjoyed this project and the concept behind creating modern Elizabethan makeup looks although when it came to working with my partner, I feel that this part was the most difficult throughout the project as me and my partner didn't communicate and work very well together.

For one of our first lessons about the Elizabethans, we were told to come in with three face chart ideas and talk about the designs and potentially pick one of them three for our final idea and talk to our partners about it. My partner turned up to this lesson with nothing so she just had to discuss some ideas through with me that she had. I had all three of my designs and talked them through with Phoebe and told her which one was going to be my final idea.

I feel a little bit angry about this as I worked very hard throughout this project, coming up with ideas and spending hours researching looks and creating face charts. I put a lot of time and effort in to create several ideas and then pick my final three and also write notes to explain my idea properly including howI wanted the makeup to look (if i wanted it blended/not blended etc). My partner practised my design in class and we discussed how we thought it looked, my partner was happy with what she had created and I asked if she wanted to practise again but she felt that she was happy with what she had done.

I eventually got my partner's design before the assessment and I practised her look. I feel her makeup design was quite basic and easy to complete so after the one practise I didn't feel the need to practise again. I would have liked to have done something a little more challenging but i'm happy with the look I created. After the practise, my partner asked me to change the application of the lip glitter from a brush to my finger and I took this into mind and consideration when it came to the assessment.

I'm very happy with the work that I have completed for the project and I think next time I will speak to one of my tutors if my partner doesn't come to the initial lesson with the work she was supposed to.

This was the makeup that my partner created on me for her assessment. I wanted the makeup to look very vibrant and to stand out as my lady in waiting character choice, Bess of Hardwick was known for wanting attention and to stand out. I chose the orange eyeshadow to represent gold and to show wealth. I tried to combine typical Elizabethan with contemporary by mixing the white eyebrows with a bold red lip and bright eyeshadow. I think my partner did an alright job of turning my face chart design into a real life makeup look. I said and showed on my face chart that I wanted my foundation base to be Kryolan supra colour in white which is a pure white foundation as I wanted this to look like typical Elizabethan and my partner did my foundation in a natural colour that I would wore as a normal everyday base. The other thing I didn't really think worked was the eyebrows as I can still see my natural eyebrows underneath and I don't think she covered them enough. I think the rest of the makeup worked. I enjoyed designing and coming up with ideas for my final design and I really feel like I learnt a lot, especially how to use certain makeup products and how to use certain brushes. I feel like I have become a lot more confident and I now really enjoy coming up with new ideas and creating new face charts and also applying makeup on other people. At the start of the project I found it a little bit difficult to get used to the new products and brushes and also to work on the face charts as I had never properly practised them before but with lots of practise I then found it quite easy. I really enjoyed doing the research for my project and finding inspiration to incorporate into my designs, I also found lots of new photographers/makeup artists and designers who I can look at in the future for more inspiration. I found working to the brief quite well and I enjoyed the project a lot, I found it a lot easier that my partner's makeup design was fairly easy but I would have liked something more challenging to push myself a bit further.

These are the images from the makeup that I completed for my assessment on my partner. I feel that the assessment went really well and I am very happy with the outcome. My partner and I practised the look and talked about what we thought went well and if we wanted to change anything. She decided she wanted to change the application of the lip glitter by using my finder rather than a brush to give a softer look. I am really happy about the final outcome of the makeup look. I like the way the skin appears in the final images as it looks really highlighted and dewy. The white eyebrows and white eyelashes really stand out against the harsh contouring and lip colour. From the face chart below, I really think that I did a good job of bringing my partner's idea to life.

6 different poses I find inspiring

When asked to research 6 different poses that I find inspiring, the first thing that came to my mind was 'does it have to be makeup related?' I come across images everyday of celebrities, family members, friends and even strangers that I find inspiring. I like the typical model walking down a catwalk pose but I decided to make this assignment a bit more interesting.

The first image I came across was this one above. The man in the photo is Mark Reay who is a Chanel and Vogue model. From looking at this image, you would think that he is posing for a front cover image of Vogue magazine but that is untrue, after finding an article about this model it turns out he is actually homeless. Although he is a model for very famous magazines, he found himself not being able to afford the rent in New York and sleeps on the streets. I like this image because he is standing in the middle of a public toilet in a very nice outfit and you might think he's photographing there on purpose but the true story behind it is that he probably woke up and went there to get dressed before his photo shoot. This image and story really stands out to be because this man could easily go to any other city in the world but chooses to live rough in New York purely to achieve his dreams of becoming a famous fashion model, it gives me hope to never give up on my dreams.

This second image is of my favourite singer, Morrissey. To me, he is my role model and I find myself very inspired by him after taking in his footsteps and becoming a strict vegetarian almost four years ago. This image shows him holding a turkey and there is something about it that I just really like, whether it's the way he looks like he is caring about this animal or just the fact he is posing next to it, I am inspired by it.

David Bowie is another one of my favourite musicians. This pose of his is my favourite as I like how sassy he looks with his stripy all in one suit and his bright red knee length boots with his pose. I find him to be one of them people who doesn't care what anyone thinks of him and I like this because I am similar and he inspires me and gives me confidence to be who I want to be.

Recently, Alex Box posted this photo of herself working backstage whilst holding her son. She posted a paragraph with the image saying 

''I'm a full time mum and artist and on this occasion my son came with me to a shoot ,he feel asleep on my shoulder as i worked on a makeup look '......

..Ive thought long and hard about posting this picture as i never post private pictures and feel very emotional about this subject .. '....But i think as a woman in an industry that often pedals the myth that woman and men cant have 'both' a career and family life ,i think its important to have role models that say the 'real' life IS the strength and love and inspiration for ' the art/work'.....i realize im very lucky and not many people can bring there children to shoots or work and certainly couldnt just play and then do there work. I don't work that often whilst brining up my son as I said I'm blessed and lucky to be able to choose .

I find this very inspiring as Alex Box is one of my favourite makeup artists of all time and I inspire to be like her in a few years time by working for one of the most famous makeup brands in the world and also working freelance for film, tv and fashion. I also find it so inspiring how she manages to balance her personal life with her work and how passionate she is about everything.

Charlotte Free is my favourite model, I remember coming across an image of her when I was around 14 and being inspired by the way she looks with her unique clothing and bright pink hair and I wanted to be like her. I really like this image as it reminds me of an Alice in Wonderland style and I like how she is looking into the mirror at herself and the photographer has captured both the real her and the mirrored version of her. I'm not quite sure why I find this image inspiring but I think it's just because I find her inspiring and this is my favourite image of her.

Since I started this project and I had to research Elizabethans, I found myself being really interested in history again. When I was at school this was one of my favourite subjects so I was very happy when I found out that this was our first project to complete. When I looked at all the ladies in waiting, I chose Bess of Hardwick to base my final makeup look off as I found her a very interesting character. I like how intimidating and powerful she looks and by her just sitting there with a gold chain around her neck and a long black dress on, she looks like a very wealthy and interesting person. I found it fun to research about her and find out some more and from all of her images, this is my favourite one of hers and I thought I would include her in my images that I find inspiring. 

3 Brush challenge

Today in class we did the 3 brush challenge. We had to pick one face chart that we had created and complete it by using only 3 makeup brushes of our choosing. I decided to go with this face chart as I thought it would be challenging and fun to attempt this.

My set up above and left shows the three brushes I chose, Kryolan flat foundation brush, Mac 217 brush and Salon Services angled brush.

This was my final look. I was happy with some parts of this and wasn't with others. I think the eyebrows and eyes turned out good but I wasn't happy with the contour or the lips. I had to contour my partner's face with a small eyeshadow brush so I found this hard and for the lips, I had to use the same brush to apply three different colours to her lips (using a spatula so there was no double dipping or cross contamination.) I think I would like to practise doing a 3 brush challenge again on a easier look but I am glad I set myself something challenging to attempt.
