In 2012, she was joined by Josh Wilks and together they collaborated to create a conceptual approach to their work. Earlier this year, the pair launched their own apparel project called English School.
Growing up in Cambridge, she moved to London at the age of 18 and took a course in 3D design at Chelsea College of Arts and went on to study Product and Industrial Design at Central Saint Martins.
I really like how she describes makeup and the face, she said 'I learnt how to address the face as an overall, structural entity rather than just in two dimensions.' She also said that when she was growing up, she never took an interest in makeup and was more of a sporty child, it was only when she took a weekend job during her study at University doing children's face painting that she realised she enjoyed doing makeup. She created a design on a friend and after getting her name around, she started to get real makeup jobs.
Her very first fashion shoot was for i-D Magazine, she claims she wasn't into fashion and didn't know what she was doing but she worked with photographer Matthew Stone on the shoot and had to create body painting designs on the models and ended up really enjoying it.
A recent interview with i-D seen her say 'Everything's become all about the ego and almost about the loss of one's self. Wearing a mask, even painted on with makeup, is a tool for constructing identity.' I like this as every makeup design a makeup artist creates is all about changing the model's identity for a short period. Makeup is about creating a completely new character. She said she swapped from Art to Makeup as she likes to explore makeup as a relevant addition to the face and to engage with the narrative of a character as opposed to just making something that looks pretty.
I found it interesting to read her interview with i-D Magazine, especially the part when she was talking about the makeup that she uses in her kit. I always like to read about other artists' kit makeup as inspiration for myself. Isamaya says brands like MAC, Mehron and Kryolan are her favourite. Her favourite products by these brands are the greasepaints, body paints and mixing mediums. For skin care, her favourite products are Bioderma, which she uses with a Q-tip to correct mistakes, she also likes Dior Pore Minimiser and Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream.
Artists that have inspired her and her work are Pat McGrath and Georgina Graham, both of whom makeup is very inspirational and reminds me of her style a lot.
Her work is very original and usually just shows a part of the body such as lips covered in glitter or bright colours. Her portfolio also includes a lot of natural looking images with highlighted cheeks or super strong bold eyeliner. I really like all of her work and I feel that she could inspire me and my work.
These images are my favourite 5 from her porfolio. All of them are completely different and show a different style and uses different types of products. For example, the middle image looks like she has used mud and clay to create the look. The first two are quite natural looking makeup images and the last two use bright, bold colours.
